"Everything that is done to take care of my dog, Jupiter, is done by me. When Jupiter can run free of any fleas or ticks, it is because I washed him. If he can laze in his clean bed, his stomach full, it is because I put his bed through the laundry and provided him with ample food. When Jupiter needs to go outside, I open the door to let him out: when he wants back in, I am the one who opens the door to let him come in. Jupiter is a pug, so the folds of his face-not to mention his ears-are usually caked with grime, yet he never has to suffer for it, because I am the one who takes Q-tips to clean up his face (no matter how much he may squirm).
Despite the major responsibilities I have caring for Jupiter, having a pet-particularly a dog-is a very rewarding experience. "Scientists," according to a Yahoo article, "have discovered that people who own pets tend to have lower levels of stress...than non pet owners. For people dealing with severe stresses, having a pet has been shown to help provide social support and assist their recovery." One website, HealthyPet.com, supports this claim. They write, "You've probably noticed that when you pet a soft, warm cat or play fetch with a dog whose tail won't stop wagging, you relax...Scientists have noticed the same thing, and they've started to explore the complex way animals affect human emotions and physiology. The resulting studies have shown that owning and handling animals significantly benefits health."
I will attest to the truth of those two passages. As a high school student preparing to enter college, stress is a daily part of my life- what with exam scores to worry about, tests to study for , and assignments to complete-yet Jupiter's loud yelps each day as I walk through the door, his eager attempts to lick my hand, the look he gives me as he rolls onto his back for a belly rub are the most effective medicines to wash away the anxiety. Jupiter's presence in my life makes everything that much easier.
